Although our anniversary is still a few weeks away, Amy and I are celebrating this weekend. We’re headed to Chapel Hill where I’ll teach a cooking class at Southern Season centered around the food in my novel, Doughnuts for Amy. I swapped favors with a very good friend of mine and he has loaned me his Corvette convertible for the weekend. Before you ladies start rolling your eyes and you men start salivating, understand that I plan to bring the car and wife home sunday afternoon in the same condition that I found them in this morning.
Who needs music when you have a ported and polished 425 horsepower V8?
At the moment we’re handed our first set of car keys, most men believe that at that instant we are suddenly injected with Mario Andretti’s DNA, just like the scene in the Matrix when Trinity asks for a “Helicopter program.” Sorry but nothing could be further from the truth. If you ever want to understand the how’s and why’s of performance driving then may I suggest a visit to the BMW Performance Center in Greer, SC. While our restaurant was open, I was clever enough to host Winemaker’s Dinners with these guys and every year for five years I spent the day learning how to make an automobile behave. My Amy is all in favor of me driving quickly, but not fast and I would prefer to see her smiling on this trip, not seasick so I’m not going to do anything stupid.
We’ll take photos and notes and upon our return I’ll share a few details.
And in case anyone thinks this is a good time to ransack our castle while we have our backs turned, we’ve hired this babysitter to watch over the place.

LOL – his humor – one of the many reasons I love him and he offered for me to drive 1st before I even asked. That’s the secret to 25 years! PS I hope the Nanny has a good sense of humor if she sees this!
